How it Started
I founded Vintage Thang in May of 2018. The boutique’s idea began how every shopaholic’s story transpires: a closet bursting at the seams with clothes and shoes. Unfortunately, that closet was mine. My closet wasn’t just a personal problem. It was a personal store.
The Early Years
Growing up, my mother and I bonded over trips to antique stores on weekends. One trip, we decided to go to New York and explore as many antique stores and vintage boutiques as possible. I was inspired by an underground dance club called Swing 46. There, I stepped into a whole different world. The walls were covered in red velvet drapery. A live jazz band played in sleek black tuxedos. Couples were swing dancing and flipping all over the dance floor. The women were dressed like they had time traveled from the 1930s. I was in love. From that moment on, every day after school I would watch swing dancing for hours on YouTube and practice pin curling my hair into Hollywood waves.
My bedroom became my sanctuary in the form of a time capsule. Antique mirrors and paintings covered the walls, and clothes with furs and rhinestones poured out of my closet. I would be in there for hours dancing and putting different outfits together, admiring my collection and the space I had created. I dreamed of the day I could own an antique store.
The Passion Project
In trying to turn my shopping addiction into a healthy outlet, I turned to Instagram. Vintage Thang started as an online blog to share my outfit ideas, design inspirations, and dreams of being an antique store owner while in college.
The Storefront
I returned to Florida from living and studying in Bali right before Covid shut everything down. Like many others during this time, I was restless. I began to focus on how I could take my blog to the next level. I thought about what I had learned about the wholesale market and the furniture industry in Bali. I realized what I had to do next. In May of 2021, I opened the brick-and-mortar boutique that is now Vintage Thang.
